Political Trivia.

On the record.

Privacy

One policy for Political Trivia and every game on it: Yea or Nay, Split Decision and Pollster.

The short version

You can play every game without an account. If you sign in, we store your scores so they follow you between devices, and you can choose to share them with friends you approve. We email you only if you ask us to. We never sell personal information, and advertisers and sponsors only ever see aggregate traffic numbers, never who you are.

What we collect

  • Playing without an account: your results are saved in your own browser’s local storage. They stay on your device.
  • If you sign in with Google: we receive your name, email address and profile photo from Google, and we store your game results against your account so your record and streak sync across devices.
  • Anonymous daily tallies: when a puzzle is finished we add one to that day’s aggregate counters (how many played, the score distribution). These contain no identity at all.
  • If you ask for email: we record that you asked, when, and the exact words you agreed to. See Email below.
  • Contact and advertising forms: whatever you type, delivered to us as email.

Friends

Adding friends is optional and only available when you are signed in. The first time you open your profile while signed in, we create a profile card holding your name and photo as Google gave them to us, and a random eight-character friend code. Your email address is never part of it.

Nobody can search for you or browse a list of players. Someone can find your profile card only if you give them your code or invite link. When a person sends you a friend request, neither of you sees anything more until you accept it. Once you accept, each of you can see the other’s name, photo, and daily scores, averages and streaks in every game. Friends can never change your record.

You can remove a friend, decline a request or cancel one you sent at any time from your profile. Removing a friend ends their access to your scores immediately.

Email

We email you only if you ask us to. Signing in does not subscribe you to anything, and the choice is never ticked for you. You can ask on your profile, or in a question we put to signed-in players once.

If you say yes, we may send two kinds of email to the address on the Google account you signed in with: the weekly newsletter, with the week’s best questions and answers; and reminders about your own record, when a streak is at risk or, once or twice, if you have not played for a while. Never more than one email a day. A newsletter may carry a sponsor’s line, labeled as the site’s are. We do not use your address for anything else, and we never give or sell it to sponsors or advertisers.

You can keep one kind and stop the other on your profile. To stop everything, untick the choice there or use the unsubscribe link in any email; each link says what it stops, and every email offers a way to stop all of it. Either works at once and you do not need to tell us why. We keep the record of your choice, with its date, so that we can show what you agreed to.

Analytics and cookies

We use Google Analytics to understand how the games are used: pages viewed, puzzles completed, rough geography. It sets cookies and collects usage data under Google’s privacy policy. We use it for audience statistics only, not advertising profiles.

Sponsors and advertisers

Sponsored placements are labeled on the page. Sponsors and advertisers receive aggregate figures from us, such as daily players and page views, and nothing else. No personal information is sold, rented or shared with them. If you click through to a sponsor, their own privacy policy applies from there.

Where your data lives

Accounts, synced results, profile cards and friend connections are stored with Google Firebase; the sites are served by Cloudflare; form submissions are relayed by FormSubmit; email to subscribers is sent through a mailing service, which receives your address and first name for that purpose only. Each processes data on our behalf under its own terms.

Deleting your data

Email us and we’ll delete your account and everything stored with it, including every result, your profile card, your friend code, your friend connections and your email choice, usually within a few days. Include the Google email you signed in with.

Request deletion by email

Results saved only on your device can be removed by clearing this site’s browsing data in your browser. The anonymous daily tallies can’t be deleted because they were never tied to you.

Changes

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we’ll note it here. Questions? Write to us.
